As the largest consumer nation in the world, the US also ranks as the largest municipal solid waste producer. Every year Americans generate more than 180 million tons of solid waste. It is estimated that by the year 2010, this figure will exceed 200 million tons per year. Communities must act now to reduce waste and recycle as much of the remaining waste as possible.
